Pittsburgh Lands Another New Movie In Mount Washington

Pittsburgh's going Hollywood for the 12th time this year.

A new movie called "In Northwood" is shooting at Prospect Middle School on Prospect Street in the city's Mount Washington neighborhood.

"Pittsburgh is like the best back lot in the world," said the movie's producer, Mount Lebanon native Mike Wittlin. "You have everything you need to shoot a film here. The crews are great."

Cast members include Nick Stahl from "Terminator 3" and HBO's "Carnivale;" Olivia Wilde from "House M.D.," "The Black Donnellys," "Turistas" and "Alpha Dog;" Dash Mihok from "I Am Legend" and "Felicity;" Tariq Trotter, lead singer of the Roots; and Shohreh Aghdashloo of "House of Sand and Fog" and "24."

The story is a psychological thriller that takes place in fictional Northwood, a hospital for the criminally insane.

"I wouldn't call it a morality tale, but people get what they deserve in the movie and they pay an ultimate price for the things they've done," Wittlin said.

Movie business is booming in Pennsylvania, after a 25 percent tax credit was created for filmmakers who spend 60 percent of their budget in the commonwealth.

"It's bringing people here because it's attracting films," Wittlin said. "It's nice to be able to come to the city and know you can afford to do a little bit more within your budget because you have that as a backup."

The Pittsburgh Film Office said southwestern Pennsylvania has already raked in $150 million from films shot here.
